A Purchasing Diary Update: I Have Ish-Shoes...

Forgive me diary for it has been four months and about 19 days since my last entry. Admittedly I have made a few purchases since that post. However, I will begin the process of catching up with my most recent two. The first is a long-sought out pair of black shoes. It was incredibly difficult to find a pair to replace the ones I had because apparently, a non-platform, non-peep toe, non-patent leather black shoe ought to be on the endangered species list. At long last, a more than acceptable option was revealed to me; and not a moment too soon I made them my own.

So, it was out with the old:

The second pair I purchased didn’t replace anything. They were purchased simply “because”… I mean really, after what I just went through trying to find a black shoe, I wasn’t about to walk away from these cognac brown beauties:

I was shopping Saks off 5th and they were having a 50% off of the lowest tagged clearance price sale and I couldn’t pass up these Jhane Barnes micro-cords… I didn’t particularly feel that micro-cords are the most “relevant” or “current” of fashion choices these days but for less than $15.00 I couldn’t pass em up!

It’s been years since I’ve purchased any Hilfiger for whatever reason…but this rugby caught my eye while browsing the racks in the Hilfiger section at Macy’s. Pictures don’t do the quality of this garment justice, and the embellishments are astonishing! Anyways…$88.00 off made this rugby all the more undeniable!

We Are the 87.5 Percent!

I must admit that after the whole “Missoni for Target” episode, I was reluctant to even mention “Marni at H&M.” However, words have power and though subtle, great pains were taken to distinguish between these two events. Missoni produced a line specifically for Target, while Marni’s collection is being featured at H&M. Not being one to overlook that particular nuance, I “studied” the look book and identified the pieces I wanted to add to my wardrobe. I figured that I would quietly participate in the process and confess afterwards; or so I thought.

Of the more than 200 H&M stores in the US, only 26 received the Marni at H&M collection today; the “priveleged” 12.5 percent! Six of the 26 stores are in New York and another 6 are in California. As you may have guessed, my city’s store is NOT among the remaining 14. This is where the church lady in me comes out, “Hmmm, well isn’t that special!”

Though I won’t have the opportunity to shop the collection, I give H&M credit for limiting the number of items that can be purchased (“every customer can buy from the entire collection but with a limit of purchasing a maximum of two pieces per product”) and for trying to put some structure around the chaos that is sure to ensue (“only a group of 10 can shop the collection at a time, each group will have 15 minutes to shop with 5 minute intervals between groups”). That said, I still think it is really unfortunate that they chose to release the “collection” in such a limited fashion (yes, that pun was intended.)

It seems that the standard H&M fare is good enough for the masses, but only the 12.5 percenters are worthy of the “good” stuff … I guess that makes the rest of us the “87.5 percenters.” Let us eat cake! Or, in this case, buy $5.99 t-shirts!

To pour salt into this fashion wound, though the “collection” doesn’t officially launch until today, as early as last week items began to appear on eBay at prices marked up anywhere from 100 to 200 percent. How that happened, I guess only H&M employees and insiders will ever know.

So, I guess that is that. I may have been reluctant to admit my interest, but I have no problem confessing that I am a tad ticked. Yes, I realize that there are far weightier issues with which I should concern myself; and trust me, I do. However, on some level even this seemingly trivial matter is yet another illustration of the imbalance in access to needed goods and services many people face on a daily basis. Even in the trivial there can be a teachable moment.

What I love about niche “labels” like Brooklyn Circus is the way they boldly communicate not only your personal taste but several of your “internal-perspectives” on life itself! How you may ask? Well…Brooklyn Circus in particular heralds such a respect and appreciation for more traditional early american Urbana!

Again…to don Brooklyn Circus is to BODLY proclaim your own hyper-sophisticated command of personal style and taste!

p.s. (due to BKC’s increasing exposure and it’s apparel’s very ltd. release quantities, the price point is considerable! Not only that but their releases seem to sell out in a week or so…so if you see something you can’t live without…don’t sleep or you’ll have to!!! BKC doesn’t go on sale…it sales out!!!)

Duckie Brown's Menswear for F/W 2012...

I absolutely love the designs that Duckie Brown’s offering for this fall & winter season! I would without a doubt sport these trousers in each of these shots as well as the jackets sans the oversized plaid one!

Being I live in an at times extreme winter climate I’d presumably be extremely comfortable in these oversized wool/flannel trousers and jackets!

I hope a couple of these offerings will be reasonably accessible!? ($)
